I am a self-taught, 24-year old enthusiast photographer born, raised, and currently living in Kingston Upon Hull, United Kingdom. Ever since I was 14, I've always enjoyed capturing photos, whether that be days out with family, or specifically venturing to a location where I know there to be an opportunity for an amazing capture.
Looking back, I can't pinpoint exactly what struck my passion for this expensive field of interest. I can however thank my Grandad, who taught me the basics of the camera and composition. Also, hundreds, if not thousands of YouTube videos over the years, learning about the different modes and buttons on a camera, as well as how important lighting is, more so than the type of equipment you're using.
I've only ever had one profession in the photography industry. I got my first part-time job at Jessops when I was 17. I used to visit the Hull store (which is unfortunately now closed) most weekends when I was in town, and got friendly with the staff there. With me studying at sixth form, I needed some form of income to pay for my first car at the time (the mighty 2006 Mk3 Renault Clio) and the absurd monthly insurance price. As luck would have it, the week I got my car, I was contacted by the manager to come for an interview for a part-time position that had opened up that week. Luckily they had my CV on file that I handed in 3 months prior! Having passed the interviews, I started in October 2017 and left in November 2018 for an apprenticeship in the IT industry.
During my time I learned something new every day, as I had to sell and explain to customers the different functions of each camera, and which one is better than the other, along with meeting sales targets. For my first job, it got me comfortable with speaking to people and helped me gain extra knowledge in the area.
Perhaps one day I can make a profession out of photography, whether that be shooting weddings, working for an agency, or even myself where I explore the world documenting and recording the process for viewers. At present, I am happy with keeping this as a hobby and being a weekend warrior. It helps me turn off after work and creates memories for the future.
